Weekly News – 19th Oct Meet

This week’s meet tested us with the icy cold wind. But we managed to get through most of the scheduled program. We also had some technical issues with the timing gates but our committee will continue to work through the issues.

Officials:
We were also short on a few event officials which meant our officials had to do multiple roles on the day. The more officials we have the more backup we have if there is an official away. We even have several officials who are married couples which means if they have a weekend off for a holiday we lose 2 officials. So we are asking for expressions of interest from any parents who are willing to learn the ropes at some of our field events by shadowing our existing officials so that we have someone to fill in when we are short. More officials also means that we can possibly run multiple age groups at the same time i.e open two sand pits up or two shot puts etc.
If we had the opportunity to do this the morning would run much faster and there would be less waiting between events.

Safety & Code of Conduct:
Please remember that athletes who are not participating in an event are not permitted on the infield of the track. This is due to safety reasons. The only parents permitted on the field are those that are parent helpers for an event. Those parent helpers should be wearing a high vis vest. All other parents should remain behind the track fence. It is very easy to watch each event from behind the fence but if you want a closer look we encourage you to become a parent helper at the events.
Please talk to your children about respecting and listening to our officials. If an official asks them to get off equipment or move off the arena this should be respected. We are volunteering so that your children can participate, so please respect that. If athlete’s repeatedly ignore officials instructions the official has the option to disqualify the athlete from an event.

Parent Helpers:
This week saw 22 parent helpers – which is a bit lower than previous weeks. We have seen many new families assist at events which has been great.
Our gold medal performance for parent helpers this week goes to Ben J – thank you for your help!
Please ensure when you do assist at an event that you sign your name off on the parent helper sheet. If you’re unsure where it is , please ask the event official.
